Blassreiter: Part 1

Blassreiter: Part 1

It’s not everyday you encounter a horror/ science fiction anime property set in Germany with blood laden cover art and a German title that translates to “Pale Rider” in English. I just finished FUNimation’s forthcoming release of Blassreiter The Complete Series Part 1 and came away quite surprised with the sheer “coolness” of the show’s concepts and melding of several well-established genres.

Released across two discs, Blassreiter The Complete Series Part 1 comes packaged in a pair of thin packs within an outer cardboard slipcase and consists of episodes 1-12. The show comes in at a total runtime of 288 minutes and wears an appropriate TV MA (mature, 17+) rating due to violence and gore.

Language options are standard sub & dub with both an English dub and original Japanese soundtrack (either in Dolby 5.1 Digital Surround) & the choice of English subtitled if so inclined to turn them on.

Extras include a commentary by the English cast over Episode 12, Japanese promotional videos (with English subtitles), textless opening and closing songs, and a host of fresh Funimation trailers on the second disc.

The story goes something like this: In a fictional German city, an apparent outbreak of biomechanical creatures named “Demoniacs” rises from human corpses with an appetite for violence and destruction. Unlike your typical zombies however, the Demoniacs display the ability to merge with nearly any technology (which often includes cars, busses, bikes and so on), which not only gives them control of said machine but also enhances their own abilities. In a very real sense it’s zombies meets Transformers with a bit of Mad Max thrown in for good measure.

Don’t worry though, humanity isn’t about to let the world fall to the grips of the biomechanical monsters and the viewer is carried along with the exploits of the opposition: XAT, Xenogenesis Assault Team, who polices the Demoniacs in effort to keep the peace as well as investigate the potential causes for the blood-borne phenomenon.

Now don’t go and get too attached to the XAT though as this is really a tale of a lone rider charged with the daunting task of saving civilization. This rider, a fellow by the name of Joseph Jobson, rides into town a blend of flesh and motorcycle like some outlaw straight out of a spaghetti western with plans to hack, slash, and slaughter the Demoniacs running amok.

The catch is that Jobson’s own blood is tainted with the very same plague he’s out to put in check which means that it is a constant struggle to subdue the very thing he means to conquer.

The show is an interesting blend of ideas and plays out perhaps closest to the hopelessness of Blue Gender coupled to the element of self-control made famous in Claymore. There is a constant threat of the lead character’s lapse in perseverance resulting in his irreversible tumble into madness- in this case a fate worse than death.

The pacing is fairly brisk with a bit of “extreme” sports participation (in the form of cycle racing) and religious undertones on a grand scale. The line between good and evil is a fairly clearly established save for the “Pale Rider” himself, who, like many great comic mythos, borders on being an anti-hero.

The visuals are tight (as almost always is the case with Gonzo’s pieces) with a bit of a heavy leaning upon CGI animated sequences over the slightly less flashy cell segments. Many of the backgrounds are downright spectacular with emphasis on mood and lighting effects. Character animation is fluid and consistent as well. The overload of 3-D effect segments aside, there is much to get excited about in terms of the show’s look and style are concerned.

Consisting of a total of 24 episodes, this collection represents the first half of the tale and has got this reviewer anticipating the release of the second (and final) half of the collection.

Blassreiter: Part 1 Feature

Blassreiter: Part 1 Overview

A blood-born plague races across Germany, giving life to mechanized monsters who are hell-bent on making a bloody mess out of anyone in their path. Known as Demoniacs, these creatures have the perverse ability to meld with technology and wield it as an extension of their uncontrollable cyber rage. Standing in their way is civilization’s last hope for a savior. Joseph Jobson – the mysterious blue rider – fuses with the unreal technology of his battle-tested motorcycle to defend man against machine. But the same tainted blood that carries his strength, threatens to devour his soul – leaving him nothing more than a murderous demon. The future of death is now, and it refuses to be stopped.

Blassreiter: Part 1 Specifications

The title of the sci-fi adventure Blassreiter (2008) means “Pale Rider,” a standard translation of the description of Death in the Book of Revelation. Motorcycle champion Gerd Frentzen suffers traumatic injuries when a weird mecha attacks the riders during a major race. A mysterious woman offers him a pill that will restore the use of his legs, but nano-machines in the pill turn Gerd into an Amalgam, a human/cyborg that can fuse with machinery. Gerd struggles to prevent himself from transforming into a creature similar to the one that attacked him, but it’s a losing battle. The contagion spreads, both through contact with Amalgams and through the pills the woman offers. Malek, a misanthropic teenager, takes a pill to avenge a friend who was bullied into committing suicide. Fighting the Amalgams are the officers of the paramilitary XAT, including Amanda, who adopted Malek. Disentangling the convoluted story line of Blassreiter is a real challenge: characters who appear to be protagonists fall into comas or drop dead as the focus of the narrative shifts to someone else. The shots of speeding motorcycles and battling cyborgs provide some excitement, but they’re repeated so often, they lose their punch. The filmmakers also shift tone abruptly, going from mawkish sentiment to murderous violence. The pseudo-religious mumbo-jumbo about a “Chosen One” can’t disguise that similar nano-plague plots have been used many times before and to better effect. (Rated TV MA; suitable for ages 17 and older: brief nudity, considerable violence, violence against women, sexual situations, profanity, grotesque imagery, potentially offensive religious imagery, alcohol and tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

The Da Vinci Code – Official Trailer 2 [2006]

August 27th, 2010

The story tells the investigation started by symbolist Robert Langdon and a good-looking cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, around the murder of a Museum Louvre’s curator. In fact, the unfortunate murdered man was Sophie’s grandfather, and the corpse was found with a series of symbols and codes, like a pentagram and a Fibonacci number sequence. But police detective Fache will begin to chase Langdon, who escapes after receiving a warning about the captain’s real intentions. Sophie has with her a kind of key with dots and number 24 engraved on it, which opens to her and Langdon a big complex investigation that involves a supposedly heretic theory: Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene were, in fact, a couple who produced a daughter named Sara. A millenarian sect called The Priory of Sion has kept for centuries the secret of that matter. A masochist and kind of psychopath albino monk, Sibilas, an Opus Dei member, will chase Langdon and Sophie as well, in order to impede that they solve the mystery of Christ and Mary Magdalene, and also the real meaning and location of the Holy Grail. A passionate British researcher, will help Langdon in his quest, revealing to them several symbolisms in Da Vinci’s master work The Last Supper, traveling to mythical places in the UK, such as The Church Temple, where it is believed that a group of Templars Knights are buried, and Sir Isaac Newton’s tomb at Westminster Abbey, where are located some of the main keys to solve the Holy Grail’s mystery. Justice League – The New Frontier (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD)

Justice League – The New Frontier (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD)

One of my favorite entries in this movie line, The New Frontier is an adaptation of Darwyn Cooke’s best selling graphic novel. Like Doomsday, it is severely shortened in terms of story but it doesn’t feel as rushed as the other despite having more characters. Set in two of my favorite decades and in a time when the adventures in comics were actually enjoyable though a tad silly (I can’t get enough of the Golden and Silver Age), New Frontier brings together seven of the world’s mightiest heroes to form the greatest superhero group ever.

The story mainly focuses on Hal Jordan, The Flash and Martian Manhunter while Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman have smaller roles and Aquaman has a cameo near the end. In the prologue, an unseen author is possessed by a being called the Center, a living island that can spawn dinosaurs that plans to destroy mankind. Set during the fifties into 1960, the heroes that were present in WWII are now labeled as Communist and the Justice Society disbands. Superman signs on with the government while Batman continues in his ways and Wonder Woman heads back to Paradise Island. Hal, J’onn and Barry each have their own story that leads them to the climatic battle at the end. Despite not originating in the comics, the Center is a great threat to unite the heroes. Not fully shown until the end, the ominous voice that possesses several characters really builds it up as a force to be reckoned with. It’s amazing how many heroes are featured in this, whether it be a large role or a fleeting cameo. Other than the Justice League, here’s just a small list of the heroes that appear;

Green Arrow
The Blackhawks
Challengers of the Unknown
Adam Strange
The Justice Society
The Metal Men

Another great thing is that they tie in the year that each character appeared; Martian Manhunter (1954), The Flash (1956), Green Lantern (1959) and lastly, ending on their iconic encounter with Starro the Conqueror, the JLA (1960).

The animation is fantastic and, unlike Doomsday, the characters look nothing like their JL/JLU counterparts. Instead the characters reflect their Golden/Silver Age appearances. Batman first appears in his long ears and purple gloves costume but by the end, he’s in his Silver Age costume, with Robin by his side and fighting in the Bat-Plane (looks better in the fifties than today). While he has no speaking lines, Green Arrow is beardless, sporting more of a Robin Hood look in his costume and flying his Arrow Plane during the climax. The cities, clothes and vehicles also reflect the time period fantastically. Also of note is the fact the characters actually go through wardrobe changes throughout the film instead of staying in one outfit (except Superman and Wonder Woman) as is the usual in animation.

Andrea Romano unites an all-star talent voice cast that is nothing short of perfection. Technically playing the character back in the nineties, Lucy Lawless is excellent as Wonder Woman and is probably the only person (other than Lynda Carter) I would like to see play the role in a feature film. Jeremy Sisto brings a deeper gravelly voice to Batman compared to what we’ve heard in the past while Kyle MacLachlan is great as ’50s Superman, displaying an authoritative voice that Baldwin failed to do in Doomsday. David Boreanaz is wonderful as Hal Jordan (the Green Lantern who should be featured more prominently in recent animated projects), able to convey Hal as a man who is willing to fight for his country. Neil Patrick Harris and Miguel Ferrer are good with Flash and the Martian Manhunter, bringing their own interpretations to the characters while retaining a bit of what we’ve heard in the past.

Justice League – The New Frontier (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) Overview

Inspired by the best-selling graphic novel by Darwyn Cooke and produced by the multiple Emmy® award winning animation legend, Bruce Timm, The New Frontier is the epic tale of the founding of the Justice League. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are all here of course, and so are Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Flash – whose incredible origins will be told for the very first time. Strangers at first, these very different heroes must overcome fear and suspicion to forge an alliance against a monster so formidable, even the mighty Superman can not stop it. If they fail, our entire planet will be “cleansed” of humanity.

101 Dalmatians (Limited Issue)

101 Dalmatians (Limited Issue)

101 Dalmatians is one of my favorite Disney films… right after Alice in Wonderland & I had to buy it before it went back into the Disney vault. This movie has such a beautiful story and one of the best villains from Disney, so if you want a Disney classic for your kids or yourself to watch buy this movie. You can’t lose. Also I love Amazon.com, because I searched everywhere for this DVD and didn’t find it, but a couple clicks on Amazon got it for me. The DVD came before its estimated arrival time… which was stellar and it arrived in perfect condition. Thanks Amazon.

101 Dalmatians (Limited Issue) Feature

101 Dalmatians (Limited Issue) Overview

Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with 101 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely dalmatians who meet cute in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, who are stolen by the dastardly Cruella De Vil, who wants to make a fur coat out of them. Cruella has become the most popular villain in all of Disney; she’s flamboyantly nasty and lots of fun. But it’s the dalmatians who shine in this endearing classic, particularly those precocious pups. Telling the story from the dogs’ point of view is a clever conceit, a fundamental flaw of the live-action remake. –Bill Desowitz

Ben 10 – The Complete Season 1

Ben 10 – The Complete Season 1

My 6 year-old son recently started watching Ben 10 on television. I’m not a huge TV fan – with all the commercials and all, so I decided to get him the DVD so he could watch the shows without the interruption and also so he could see the show from the very beginning.

Need I say he LOVES it. He’s watched it over and over again. I also just picked up Season 2. BTW, the price can’t be beat.

Ben 10 – The Complete Season 1 Feature

Ben 10 – The Complete Season 1 Overview

Ben Tennyson was just an average 10-year-old kid until he discovered a strange alien watch in a crashed meteorite. Called the Omnitrix, this watch gives Ben the ability to transform into any of 10 alien heroes, all the while keeping his 10-year-old personality.

Ben 10 – The Complete Season 1 Specifications

Average kid Ben Tennyson becomes a host of alien-fighting superheroes with the help of an extraterrestrial device in Ben 10, an engaging and kid-friendly animated series that arrives on DVD with a smattering of extras for series devotees. Ben 10’s basic premise resembles the 1960s and 1980s DC Comic title Dial H for Hero, with affable teen Ben discovering an alien device called the Omnitrix after it crashes on Earth. The Omnitrix gives Ben the power to transform into ten different and powerful alien heroes, each with their own specific super powers. Ben’s discovery of the device attracts the attention of evil space warrior Vilgax, who wants it for his own universe-conquering purposes. Episodes are divided between Ben tangling with Vilgax and his crew of monstrous henchmen, and Ben’s struggles to fight crime with the Omnitrix, which occasionally malfunctions and summons the wrong hero at the wrong time. Episode highlights include “Washington B.C.,” in which scientist Dr. Amino mutates animals (including dinosaurs) into powerful monsters; “Hunted,” with Ben battling a trio of interstellar bounty hunters sent by Vilgax; and “Kevin 11,” about a maladjusted kid whose powers of energy absorption threaten to steal away the powers of the Omnitrix.

All 13 episodes of the 2005-2006 debut season of Ben 10are included on this double-disc set; fans also get a lesson on how to draw Ben from artist Scooter Tidwell, and there’s a commentary track on “Secrets” from creators/Man of Action members Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and writers Tramm Wigzell and Thomas Pugsley. Several of the commentary participants also contribute to a brief sneak preview of an upcoming season. — Paul Gaita
